Flood victims in the Southern Tier need your HELP!
Historic flooding hit the southern part of our Diocese on Wednesday night. It did the greatest damage in the towns of Woodhull, Jasper, Addison, and into Pennsylvania. This resulted in the death of a young mother who was swept into the river while driving home from work.
Residents and businesses of these communities continue to assess the situation and try to assist those affected, including members of our congregations. Many people have lost their homes completely, while even more have homes so severely damaged that it will be a long, painful, and costly process to return home.
Steuben County Manager, Jack Wheeler, said: “It’s heartbreaking and it’s something we haven’t seen in our generation.” He estimates 550 homes and businesses were damaged in Steuben County alone. The Very Rev. Troy Preston, one of those evacuated from his home late Wednesday night, said “We were lucky we were able to return to a home without damage. Many of our neighbors, friends, and parishioners can’t say the same. Words and pictures do not adequately express the enormity of the devastation or the immense need of the people. All prayers, help, and support are greatly appreciated.”
