Canandaigua Community Kitchen Receives $10,000 Grant

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Gleaners Community Kitchen, an outreach program run by St. John’s Episcopal Church in Canandaigua, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation for its work in fighting hunger in the community.

Thousands of organizations were submitted to Walmart as grant candidates through an online campaign. Gleaners was one of 10 food banks, pantries and kitchens across the country to earn a grant of this size as part of the 12 Days of Giving program.

“One in six people in the U.S. at some point each year doesn’t know where their next meal will come from,” said Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of the Walmart Foundation. “Fighting hunger is an issue that Walmart is committed to each day, but we know it takes a special significance during the holidays, and we’re happy to support these local organizations’ efforts to ensure people in their communities have proper food and nourishment.”

Since 1987, Gleaners has fed hungry Canandaiguans healthy, free meals. They now serve 18,000 meals annually.
