From the Public Policy Committee: Our baptismal vows make it clear that ministry to the overlooked and underserved is part of the Christian life.  Also, it is a fact that some national, state, and local public policies cause segments of our population to be not only underserved but harmed.  With this in mind, the Public Policy Committee has chosen to delve into New York’s youth incarceration policy — and what changes are needed to better serve teenagers caught within state and possibly national legal systems.

On May 6, our two guest speakers will be Jon Greenbaum of Roc/ACTS and Rosemary Rivera of Citizen Action. Both work to bring change to the overlooked and underserved in Rochester and New York.

Jon will address why you can’t avoid talking about racism and mass incarceration when discussing youth incarceration.  He plans to show video material just produced by Roc/ACTS. He’s been asked to explain the need for “Raise the Age” legislation sent to Albany.

Rosemary will address the “School to Prison Pipeline” and the Rochester City School District’s Code of Conduct.

Both speakers plan to allow time for Q&A.
